Focus group question , video and results (primary audience)

After coming up with many questions for our focus group , me and sam put our ideas together and came up with the following questions. We shown four clips of sitcoms , and gave then the following questions to answer about the clips.:

CLIP 1

Question one: What did you enjoy about the clip you just watched?

Question two: What didn't you enjoy about the clip you just watched?

Question three: What was your reaction to the clip? E.g. laughed, cried etc?

Question two: What didn't you enjoy about the clip you just watched?

 CLIP 4

Question one: What did you enjoy about the clip you just watched?

Question two: What didn't you enjoy about the clip you just watched?

Question three: What was your reaction to the clip? E.g. laughed, cried etc?

We then asked them to answer the following questions about sitcoms in genral:

Question one: Why do you watch Sit-coms?

Question two: What attracts you to watch a Sit-com?

Question three: What is your favorite Sit-com and why?

Question four: What part of Sit-com appeals to you and why?

Question five: What do you think makes a good Sit-com?

Question 6: What characters do you enjoy to watch when watching a sit-com?

Question 7: Finally, if you were to create your own Sit-com what characters would you create and why?

From these questions: we hope to find out what attracts the audience to a sitcom, therefore we can add this into our own sitcom , including characters, narrative and location.

Focus group results

Me and Sam both planned the focus group and split it into 2 sections. Section one being that with gave our 7 people taking part a question sheet , which had 7 questions on in which they had to fill out. The second section being we shown them 4 clips in which they answered questions about the clips they had watched. Therefore me and Sam split the results into 2, therefore my results are from the first sheet we gave them , which 7 questions. I will display my results in graphs and then summary the evidence I have found. We asked a group of 7 teenagers as this fits in well with our target audience, we did this to find out what our audience want from a sitcom.

Question one:

<!--[if !vml]--><!--[endif]-->

Summary: The overall response we got from this question was “because they are funny” everyone but two wrote this, showing that the reason people watch sitcoms is for the comedy, therefore our sitcom must include humour to be success with our target audience.

Question 2

Summary: our second question was to find out what it actually is that attracts the audience to sitcom over any other genres, we found out it was the humor  This is a unique thing about sitcoms they tackle serious issues in a light hearted way , therefore the audience enjoy the entertainment rather then the story being told.

Question 3

Summary: We then asked what their favorite was, by doing this we could get an understanding of the narrative and structure line they like. Friends and the Big Bang theory both got the highest votes , both of theses of which our about a group of friends , this is something to consider when creating our sitcom , maybe we could create it around a group of friends , as this seems most popular to our target audience.

Question 4

Summary: The part that appealed most to our target audience was the characters e.g. the stereotypes and the variety in characters, this again is great in a sitcom as we can include as many stereotypes and ‘stock’ characters as we want. So when creating our sitcom it is important we think carefully about our characters.

Question 5

Summary: One thing we thought was important was what the audience felt made a good sitcom; it was interesting to find out that as well as the humor they thought the relatable characters were important , therefore when creating our sitcom we need to make sure our characters fit and relate to the audience. Therefore it would be a great idea to involve teenagers into our sitcom.

Question 6

Summary: We wanted to find out what stereotypes they liked best therefore we could incorporate this into our sitcom, turns out they like weird, geeky characters as they are more enjoyable to watch, and also find them funny. Therefore we could have a geek character in our sitcom, which the audience will enjoy to watch.

Question 7
Summary: The last question was very broad , as we hoped get some ideas from the audience , the most popular was a flat in America , however we can not do this because of production expenses and for practical reasons. They also mentioned small setting, such as locations, such as college or work m which I think would work really well in our sitcom.

Overall Summary of research:

Overall I felt this was a great idea creating a focus group and collecting research from our target audience, as we now have a better understanding into what our target audience want. This will help when creating a sitcom suited to them. Such as the characters they like, and what attracts them to sitcom in which we can add to our sitcom making it a great success to the audience.
